The Shadow
Psalms 91:1-2 NLT
We all know God is our refuge and have heard that for a long time, but is GOD ALONE your refuge?
Psalm 91:14-15 KJV
“Because he has set his love upon Me,”
In Hebrew means: to cling, to be deeply attached to, or to set one’s longing upon. God promises deliverance when one’s heart is firmly bound to Him.
“Known My Name”: Refers to intimate personal relationship - not just intellectual awareness (knowing about God). His Name represents His character and covenant.
Verse 15: “I will be with him in trouble” means: during distress, affliction, or tight restrictive corners. God does not promise to instantly remove his people from every trial, but promises active, comforting presence directly inside the difficulty.
“Deliver him and honor him” = Grants them honor and dignity out of (as a result of) the affliction they may endure and ultimately overcome.
We may have a best friend or a husband or someone in our life that we rely on in our hard times, but we have to ask ourselves, “Is GOD ALONE our source of protection and refuge?”
Sometimes we use our WORDS to protect us - sometimes engaging in drama with people or the enemy that tries to come against us.
But when battles are in our MIND, to what or who do we rely on and run to?
In Psalms 23:5 KJV says:
“You prepare a table before me in the midst of my enemies..”
Psalm 34:8 KJV “Taste and see that the Lord is good…”
Sometimes we’re like that person who comes in the house or the party and we’re just HOVERING AROUND the table with all kinds of good food…
We’re aware of it, we smell it, we see it, but we never take our seat at the table to TASTE IT and actually experience it, because we’re too busy checking it out from afar and being distracted by the decorations, or the house decor or other things than to actually find our seat at God’s table. Spiritually, we are witnessing Him from a far away place that’s not as close as we could or should be.
For one thing…that can be creepy..to just hover Lol
Also, we never taste what He prepared for us, then we don’t get the strength and spiritual food we need for our soul.
There was one time we were trying to teach our son a lesson about paying attention and staying close to us when we were out in public and we decided to let him wander off by himself, but yet keep a close eye on him
For a while he was content because he had a sense of knowing that we were around and we were close by, but after a while, he realized he was by himself and started looking for us.
There was another instance where we took our kids and our niece to Disney and this time we were not trying to teach anyone a lesson, but our niece got separated from us and my Mom; and she was not aware that there was any real problem or real trouble.
However, us adults were petrified. We were scared that she had been lost and we would not be able to find her.
After searching and frantically running through the entire park, we were finally able to locate her at the security desk, where she had apparently found someone and let them know that we were lost.
She did not have the concept that she was the one that was lost she figured the adults were the ones that had lost their way. She knew exactly where she was lol
The point of these two stories is for us to come to the realization that we need to stay next to the Father at all times, and when we realize that we lost that closeness, we need His help and know that we are no longer in the shadow of His protection. We need the reality that we should be concerned and should start looking for Him in our lives.
On the other hand, when we are lost, Our heavenly father does as the story is told, where he left the 99 to search for the one.
Our Father is concerned for our safety where He will go to the outer most parts of the Earth, searching for us no matter what it takes.
However, we need to have the realization that there is something missing in our life and ask to find out how to get it back.
That’s why when the enemy comes against our mind, we don’t find ourselves as close to the presence of God to use the tools to overcome.
When we’ve been in God’s presence and determine to live UNDER THE SHADOW of His wings, then that’s where we find our Refuge.
How close do you have to be, to actually BE in a person’s shadow?
When there’s a fight or a battle in our thoughts or our mind, HOW CLOSE are we DWELLING UNDER HIS SHADOW? Or are we just seeing the table of His provision for us, but never taking a seat up close to actually experience it?
We can come to Church on Sunday and get a little 90 min. Recharge of something, but then the rest of the week we never take a seat and DWELL in the shadow of the Most High, where we can find rest for our souls.
If we just view His presence from a place farther away or only smell the food from a distance or have inconsistency, then we wonder why we are worn out, anxious or depressed.
You can’t just hover around the table and not ever take a seat personally to partake of what He has for us.
That means on Monday morning on the way to work or in the shower, we CHOOSE to spend time praying in the Spirit to build up our faith, praying in the Holy Ghost (Jude 1:20 KJV)
When we get to sit down with our coffee, instead of just scrolling our Facebook or playing a game, or just watching T.V., we take the time to include opening up our Bible and partaking of His table of what He’s provided.
We have to have CONSISTENT fellowship to fight a battle in our mind.
We can’t find direction and purpose just by having that communion on Sunday morning.
God will not even meet you and provide for YOUR needs if you don’t invest in time with Him (just like a relationship)
We also need to take heed or pay attention to what we hear, what we consume, and what we are feeding our mind, our heart and our emotions!
Proverbs 4:23 NIV “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Your heart is influenced heavily by the things you allow your eyes to see and your ears to hear. Take heed what you hear and fill your ears with.
Are you filling up on Christian music or listening to your old stuff?
Are you balancing the amount of time you spend in the Word with what other entertainment you fill up on?
Don’t be deceived. This can influence the health of your mind and your heart.
You can build a shelter in one place, but when a storm comes, if we’re not UP UNDER THE SHELTER and we’re 2 miles away from it, it’s not going to protect us or do us any good.
Proverbs 18:10 NLT “The Name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to HIM and are safe.”
We can only do spiritual warfare and accomplish things in our life when we are dwelling in the Secret place.
Colossians 3:3 NLT “For you died to this life, and your real life is HIDDEN WITH CHRIST IN GOD.” God will hide you in the Secret place when when we’re abiding in Him
Psalm 91:4 NLT “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”
He’s provided us with armor during every trial found in Ephesians 6:10-18 NLT
He will Equip you and make you able
Psalm 91:7 KJV “A thousand may fall at my side and ten-thousand at my right hand, it will not come near you.” Though people fall away from the faith, from their commitments; but if you keep God always before you and you abide in His shadow, it will keep you in the palm of His hand.
How are we in the SHADOW of the Most High? How close do we have to be in order to be in someone’s shadow?!
Who or what is our refuge? What do we turn to for safety?
Is it GOD ALONE?
He doesn’t just want to be one of many things we run to when we are in a battle. You can seek for help in a variety of places and sources, but God is the only one who can equip you with the way to overcome battles in your mind and in this life.
We have to have God BEFORE we face a battle, DURING a battle, and AFTER a battle.
Just like the children of Israel at the Red Sea, that were being swallowed by those who were chasing them behind them, and faced with a wall of sea in front of them, but God parted the water DURING the battle.
He still expected them to KEEP WALKING and didn’t just capture them OUT of the situation, but they had to keep walking by faith and God protected them DURING it.
In the battles of our mind that fight us in our thoughts saying, “What if this happens, what if that happens…”
Nothing surprises God. So He said in Psalms 91:11 NLT . “For He will…”. If this or that happens… then He will….deal with it.
Are we seeking and following money, affirmation, relationships to bring us security or safety?
God will many times remove the supports we lean on that don’t involve HIM being our refuge.
HE has to be our Source.
TRUST in God is developed through our relationship with Him. Until you are tested, your relationship doesn’t build TRUST.
Lack of trust shows up as control. What area are we trying to control that we have not given to God? Our money, our relationships, our expectations?
Isaiah 54:17 KJV “No weapon FORMED against you will prosper.” It doesn’t say there weren’t going to be weapons FORMED, but it won’t prosper.
